Delphinium Summer Skies [ Delphinium Elatum ] is an old-fashioned favorite. These spiked flowers originated in Europe and are found naturally in forest clearings. Gorgeous spikes come in medium light blue flowers with a white center. Elegant spikes bear blossoms that are each 3 inches across. A second set of spikes may occur and bloom in late summer or early fall. When flowers begin to fade, cut back the stalks and fertilize immediately.
Delphinium Summer Skies [ Delphinium Elatum ] must be planted in a sheltered area out of the wind, because the wind can knock the plants over. The Pacific Giant Delphinium prefers full sun and rich, moist, well drained soil. Plant in the spring after the last average frost date or as late as 2 months before the first fall frost. Pacific Giants make great cut flowers and a background for flower beds. If the seeds are planted early in the spring, the plant may bloom the first year, but the best blooms will be in the second year.
The plant is a nice cut flower.
