Johnny Jump Up Horned Violet [ Viola Tricolor ] is a compact annual or short-lived perennial, native to Spain and the Pyrenees Mountains. This variety has been used extensively in floral gardens and has escaped from cultivation to roadsides, fields and waste areas throughout much of the United States. The plant prefers partial shade to full sun in rich, well-drained soil.

Johnny Jump Up Horned Violet [ Viola Tricolor ] has the vibrant blooms that are deep purple and yellow, creating a solid carpet of color for weeks. Plant Johnny Jump Up seed in spring or fall, and choose a place with rich soil and plenty of moisture, but good drainage. Unlike most wildflowers, this one needs darkness to germinate, so a very thin covering of soil over the seed is recommended. Once established, this species often spreads rapidly, but is always loved, not hated for its spreading habits.

  1. Flowers gallore!

Posted by S. Taylor on 12th Jul 2010

I have 2 large containers with these little flowers around the edges. They are extremely tough as the seedlings frequently get snowed upon in the spring, yet they seem to survive. The plants die over winter, but they have an amazing ability to reseed the pot every year. The deer and rabbits don't seem to like them very well, which is an added plus! They draw lots of bees and pollenating insects, which is another plus in areas where the bee population is reduced. We have a little insect here that looks like a bee in the backside and a hummingbird in the front. They absolutely LOVE these Johnny Jump-Ups. These little creatures also help to pollenate my herbal strawberries in-between drawing on the Johnny Jump-Ups nector. You'll never be disappointed with Johnny Jump-Ups. They are perfect for individuals who don't like to decide what to grow in their pots from year to year.
