Lettuce Looseleaf Celtuce [ Lactuca Sativa ] is an open pollinated Chinese lettuce that can be eaten like a leaf lettuce when young. In China, where it is originated, it is used in soups or is pickled. The leaves are especially good in miso soup. At maturity the thick stems can be eaten raw or cooked like celery stalks. Non-heading plants. The easiest type of lettuce to grow. Direct seed in spring or fall. Allow plenty of space between plants for larger heads. Prefers rich, moist soil. For the most tender and crisp flavor, lettuce should be grown quickly and harvested as soon as they are ready. Plantings may be made in succession about 3 weeks apart.
