Leek American Flag [ Allium Ampeloprasum ] is a heirloom plant that is very vigorous, productive and hardy with large stalks and a fine mild flavor. The stalks are 7-9 inches long, 1-2 inches wide and blanch to a clear white. A good variety for home and market gardeners. Long stems are used in soups for their delicate flavor. Direct seed early spring or start indoors earlier for thicker stalks. To insure tender, well-blanched stems, plant in trenches and fill in as the plant grows. Keeps well in the freezer for using in winter soup.
