Vervain Hoary [ Verbena Stricta ] is an attractive perennial upright North American native plant with one to several showy light blue to blue-purple, lavender flower spikes.  Hoary Vervain established well and grew thickly, with a large floral display. It grows in narrow upright clumps 1 to 3 feet tall with showy flowers densely packed on narrow spikes.  Hoary Vervain plant foliage has a gray-green appearance that compliments surrounding greenery and is the larval host for the Common buckeye butterfly.

Vervain Hoary [ Verbena Stricta ] is an extremely drought-resistant plant that thrives on dry sandy soils and sends up its flower stalks in the heat of July and August. The plant is grown  in perennial gardens, borders, prairies, native gardens, and meadows. It tolerates a wide range of conditions including drought and often self-seeds to form striking groups. The blue-purple 1/2 inch long flowers are used as cut flowers for bouquets and when grown in a flower garden attract butterflies. Vervain seeds need a few weeks exposure to cool moist stratification before they will germinate. Plant seeds in late fall/winter or cool moist stratify before planting.

The plant withstands drought beautifully.

The plant attracts butterflies, honeybees and hummingbirds.
