Standing Cypress Ipomopsis Rubra is a sturdy, upright biennial variety native to the southeastern portion of the United States. Standing Cypress seeds can be planted indoors and transplanted outdoors after last frost. Also called Texas Plume, Red Texas Star, and Red Gilia, this biennial plant features foliage with finely divided leaves and produces brilliant red, tubular flowers that are marginally spaced throughout the entire length of the spike. Red Gilia creates a blaze of color when its spectacular towers of bright red trumpets bloom. Their fiery color is irresistible to hummingbirds that flock to it in search of nectar.

Standing Cypress fits nicely into meadows, mass plantings, and native gardens where it will add a pop of color to the back. Ipomopsis Rubra seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks, and once established, Standing Cypress tolerates drought and thrives in any good garden soil, but the plant does equally as well in sandy ground requiring little, if any, extra watering, and the spring planted seedlings do not mind cold winters, even without any protection. Standing Cypress is an excellent variety to attract hummingbirds and butterflies to the garden, and the plant may reseed and grow in following years. Texas Plume plant is highly popular as a cut flower that lasts a week or more.
