Chives Allium Schoenoprasum is a perennial herb plant native to Europe. Chives seeds can be sown directly outdoors in spring after last frost, or the seeds can be started indoors and the seedlings can be transplanted outdoors in four weeks after germination. The established Allium Schoenoprasum produces small lavender flowers and hollow stems that are edible, smelling and tasting mildly of onion. Chives plant is hardy and easy to transplant, and its leaves are very cold hardy.

Chives  is the standard variety to grow in the garden, and this herb can be used fresh, dried or frozen. Chives is used in soups, scrambled eggs, soft cheeses, mashed potatoes and salads. Allium Schoenoprasum seeds do not require light to germinate, so they can be covered with soil up to 1/8 of inch. It is recommended to grow Chives in small clumps and divide every couple of years.
