Thyme Thymus Vulgaris is a long-lived perennial herb. Thyme seeds can be started indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost, and also called Common Thyme and English Thyme, Thymus Vulgaris is a semi-woody sub shrub that forms bushy, many-branched, spreading mounds 12-18 inches high and up to twice as wide. Common Thyme features foliage with aromatic, linear to oval, slightly fuzzy, gray-green leaves that are about a half inch long, and Thyme blooms in summer producing tiny, lilac to purple flowers which are arranged in dense, compact heads. The blooming Thyme attracts bees and butterflies.

Thyme is one of the best perennial plants for growing in herb gardens, but it is also looks great in perennial borders, rock gardens, and even as an indoor plant in a sunny window. Thymus Vulgaris seeds can be successfully germinated without any special treatment, and the established English Thyme tolerates drought and average, loose, sandy soil. The good drainage is required. Thyme is essential in French cooking, as well as in almost any American dish, including casseroles, most vegetables, soups, stuffing, and sauces. The aromatic, warming flavor holds up well during long cooking times.
